Presentation of “Malvasia di Candia Aromatica” and tasting of a glass of wine
“La Vigna di Leonardo” is a project that celebrates Leonardo da Vinci, the Italian genius who loved not only art and science, but also good wine: in 1500 he chose Piacenza’s biotype “Malvasia di Candia Aromatica” as the vine to be planted in the center of Milan.
Leonardo da Vinci moved to Milan in 1482 and, a few years later, he was commissioned by Ludovico il Moro to decorate the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie (The Last Supper 1495-97). In 1499 Ludovico il Moro gave Leonardo a vineyard, in front of the Basilica, a little more than one hectare, which became a private space.
A recent restoration work has allowed us to identify with precision the original site, buried under the debris, clean it up and start investigations. The University of Milan, under the guidance of Professor Attilio Scienza and molecular geneticist Serena Imazio, has identified the vine disappeared. The genetic profile corresponds precisely to the Malvasia di Candia Aromatica, flag of the Colli Piacentini. At this point the Consortium “Vini DOC Colli Piacentini” took steps to reproduce the plant and to implant it according to the guidelines illustrated by Beltrami.
